Why is the printer toner not sticking to my vinyl material?

Laser printers work by using heat and pressure to fuse toner onto the page. Vinyl has a lower melting point than other film-based label materials. The thickness of vinyl material may require a higher fusing temperature for the toner to bond properly, but too much heat can cause the material to soften and result in printer jams.

The level of heat your printer generates depends on the manufacturer, model, and print setting. For example, more specialized media type settings like “photo” or “label” tend to slow down the feed, exposing the vinyl to heat for longer periods of time, or in some cases, increase the heat.

To avoid these issues, we recommend:
  • Start by printing on the plain paper setting.
  • Only adjust to a heavier media type setting (like photo, label, glossy, etc.), if you experience toner fusion issues on the plain paper setting.
  • Only run vinyl material in small batches (less than 25 sheets at a time).
  • Use the manual bypass tray if your printer has one.
