Legal Requirements and Design Tips for Soap Labels
Designing labels should not only be about the shape; you must also know FDA and CPSC requirements for creating soaps and what mandatory label elements to include.
Mandatory Label Elements
- Product name/statement of identity: these elements must appear on the front panel, including the full name of the soap. For example, Shea Butter Shop.
- Net weight or volume: it must appear on the front panel. For solid bar soaps, you must list them in ounces and grams; for liquids, use ounces and milliliters.
- Business name and address: include the legal business entity or DBA and physical address on the front.
- Hazard and precautionary labeling: if there is a competent categorization as dangerous by the Federal Hazardous Substances Act (FHSA), you must include the words CAUTION, principal hazard statements, first-aid instructions, storage/handling directions, and "Keep out of reach of children."
- Children’s products: if your soap is intended for or used by children under 12, it must have a permanent tracking label, pass third-party lead testing, and be accompanied by a Children’s Product Certificate (CPC) issued by a CPSC-accepted lab.
