Krylon Weatherproof / Waterproof Label Overcoat Spray

By Brittany Morrisey

Our weatherproof materials are incredibly durable on their own, but in certain cases the ink or toner that is printed on the material can benefit from additional protection. For those times when you need extreme durability, we suggest a clear overcoat spray such as Krylon® Preserve It!. Found at most craft and hardware stores, this spray is great for non-weatherproof labels that may come into contact with wet or humid conditions or weatherproof labels that need extreme durability.

Krylon® Preserve It! works on shipping labels, product labels, water bottles labels, beer bottle labels, wine bottle labels and more. This clear coating spray can be used on labels printed by laser printers or inkjet printers.

The following are some more examples of labeling applications that could potentially benefit from a clear overcoat spray:

  • Inkjet labels printed with vivid, highly saturated colors that may come into contact with moisture or heavy handling
  • Labels that may come into contact with chemicals
  • Applications where abrasion or scratching is a concern
  • Inkjet labels that are intended for use in refrigerated or frozen applications
  • Applications in which your labels will be used outdoors
  • Labels that are intended for use with soaps, oils, or other cosmetic products

How to apply Krylon® Preserve It! to Your Labels

Print your chosen design onto the labels. Make sure the ink on the labels is completely dry before beginning the spraying process.
Peel off the spacing material (label matrix) that separates one label from another to prevent sealing the label cut. This action will make sure you can still peel the label off later when the spray has dried.
Place labels on a clean surface. Shake the Krylon® Preserve It! can vigorously for a minute or two.
Hold the can 10 to 12 inches from the surface of the labels and spray one coat using a sweeping motion while keeping an even distance from the label sheet.
For an even coat, begin spraying off the surface of the labels and pass over the sheet to the other edge. Release the spray button after each pass and give the can a good shake. Repeat until label sheet is covered.
Allow labels to dry for 10 to 15 minutes. Apply more Preserve It! if you notice any uncoated areas. Be careful not to over saturate the sheet. Wash your hands thoroughly after each use.

Tips & Tricks

  • Always follow the safety precautions and directions printed on the can.
  • Make sure you are buying the right Krylon® Preserve It! Spray for your needs. The Clear Gloss Krylon® Preserve It! Spray is the best choice for most situations. The Matte Finish Krylon® Preserve It! Spray may give some labels a cloudy appearance.
  • This scent from the spray can be intense, so use in a well-ventilated area is a MUST.
