Peeling Back on Fraudulent Credit Card Orders Using Device Identification from ThreatMetrix™

Keeping the Bad Guys Out While Providing a Positive Online E-Commerce Experience for Their Customers

LOS ALTOS, CA. – April 8, 2010 – ThreatMetrix™, a fast growing provider of fraud detection solutions that do not require personally identifiable information (PII), today announced that OnlineLabels.com™, one of the largest manufacturers of laser and inkjet printable labels in the world, is using ThreatMetrix to control online fraud.

"Our online ordering system is extremely automated, therefore we may not see a suspicious order until it has been shipped," said Dave Carmany, president of OnlineLabels.com. "Over one period, we experienced a few dozen fraudulent orders that ultimately led us to find an easier method of detection. The fraudsters weren't interested in our product; they were simply using our system to test their inventory of stolen credit cards."

The Company also noticed a rise in fraudulent international orders as well, which created an additional concern. "When we fill an international order, it can be quite expensive as costs such as shipping are drastically increased," added Carmany. With the ThreatMetrix Fraud Network now in place, OnlineLabels.com has added another measure to their system in order to facilitate the processing legitimate orders and block fraudulent ones. For example, in the online ordering process a customer may provide them with a 'Bill to' and 'Ship to' address in Spain, while ThreatMetrix recognizes that their IP geographic location is actually in France. With this warning signal in hand, OnlineLabels.com opens a dialog with these customers to determine if they are the authorized user of the card. If they are not, the order can be cancelled without being processed or shipped.

The ThreatMetrix Fraud Network enables companies such as OnlineLabels.com to customize a collection of fraud rules to instantly review and analyze transactions. Based on criteria set forth by the Company, every transaction is given a fraud score each time an online order is entered into the OnlineLabels.com order processing system. When an order hits a pre-determined score, it will automatically go into a fraud review queue. It is then up to the Company to review it and gather additional data by contacting the customer. If upon closer examination it is determined to be fraudulent, the order is manually rejected. The ThreatMetrix Fraud Network can then automatically add transaction and device identifiers to blacklists. If the order is determined to be legitimate, it is released from the fraud review queue for order processing and added to a whitelist for future reference.

"Identifying fraudulent domestic and international orders has become much easier and less time-consuming with ThreatMetrix," said Carmany. "ThreatMetrix is helping us provide a reliable, expeditious and positive online e-commerce experience to our customers while keeping the bad guys out."
