Some Do's and Don'ts Regarding Cigar Care

Creating a customizable cigar band label makes your cigars look professional and leaves a lasting impression. What about caring for the cigar itself? Below are a few Do's and Don'ts to caring for and storing your cigars.

Cigar Do's:

  • It is recommended to keep your cigar in a humidor at seventy percent humidity and seventy degrees Fahrenheit.
  • The humidifier of your humidor should only be filled with distilled water.
  • If you do not have access to a humidor we suggest using a plastic container or a plastic Ziploc® baggie.
  • If you use a plastic container or baggie, be sure to get as much air out as possible.

Cigar Don'ts:

  • Do not place cigars in a refrigerator or freezer. This may cause your cigars to dry out.
  • Do not store cigars near foods with strong flavor, such as an onion. Doing so could result in your cigar absorbing the foods flavor.
  • Always allow your cigar to adapt to room temperature. Lighting a cigar directly from a refrigerator or freezer could result in the cigar's wrapper coming off the cigar.
Cutting Cigars

Cutting Your Cigar

Most cigars require cutting before being smoked. The cutting of a cigar is important to ensuring your cigar has a quality smoke, so make sure to use a sharp blade. A dull blade can cause an uneven cut and hurt the flow of the cigar pull and cause unraveling of the cigar's wrapper. Remember, don't cut your cigar until it is ready to smoke, otherwise the cigar can dry out.

These tips can help when cutting your cigar:

  1. Use a sharp blade for cutting, preferably a cigar cutter. This can't be stressed enough.
  2. It is recommended to hold the cigar at eye level to ensure a level cut.
  3. Cut into where the cap meets the body. Do not cut into the body, as this will cause the wrapper to unravel.
  4. Make a "quick" cut. If you do not apply enough pressure and cut quickly you may flatten the cigar.
Lighting Cigars

Lighting Your Cigar

First you have to decide on what to light your cigars with- it's recommended to use a butane lighter or wooden match. Both of these methods won't introduce foreign chemicals into the cigar, which could ultimately affect its taste.

Once you are ready to light the cigar follow these simple guidelines:

  1. Hold the cigar in your mouth using your index, thumb and ring finger.
  2. Place the flame directly in front of your cigar making sure the two are not directly touching.
  3. Puff on the cigar slowly while rotating it near the flame, until the cigar's outer rim begins to glow.
  4. Once the smoke is easy to draw, your cigar is lit. Be sure to puff on the cigar every so often so it will stay lit.
