Maintaining your thermal or direct thermal printer

Instructions
Read your printer's manual for specific tips
Thermal transfer printers and direct thermal printers require regular care in order to maintain their performance. Proper maintenance of your printer will ensure that you are receiving the highest quality print without having to constantly repair or replace printer components. Before operating your printer you should carefully read the printer manual for instructions on proper maintenance techniques specific to your unique printer model. Below you'll find basic guidelines intended to maximize the print quality and lifetime of your thermal transfer or direct thermal printer.

Printhead build-up is a common occurrence when printing with thermal transfer and direct thermal printers. Premature printhead failure can be avoided with regular cleaning. Dirt and residue can deposit and build over time on the printhead. Without regular cleaning, the residue could potentially become permanent and cause a "barrier" between the printhead and your labels, causing drastically reduced print quality. Some popular methods to clean the printhead are detailed below.

Cleaning Products
You can use Isopropyl alcohol or cleaning cards to clean your printhead

Isopropyl Alcohol

Isopropyl Alcohol can be used in either wipe or swab form to clean the surface of the printhead. When cleaning with Isopropyl Alcohol, the printhead must be allowed to fully dry before printing can be resumed.

Cleaning Cards

Cleaning Cards are an alternative method that can be used to clean the printhead. In addition to cleaning the printhead, cleaning cards will also clean any build-up that may accumulate on the printer's rollers. Cleaning cards should only be used periodically as constant use can cause abrasion that could potentially damage the printhead over time.

Thermal ribbons with built-in printhead cleaners

Thermal ribbons with built-in printhead cleaners are another cleaning solution, although this option is specific to thermal transfer printers. This cleaning method would be incompatible with direct thermal printers, as this type of printer does not incorporate a thermal ribbon for printing.

Regardless of which method is used, the thermal printhead on your printer should be cleaned each time you change the ribbon or the label roll. During the cleaning process, it is important to note that you should avoid touching the printhead anywhere except the edges. Even the lightest touch could potentially damage the printhead glass. Regular cleaning will ensure that you continue to receive consistently excellent printing results while also preserving your printhead from premature failure.

In addition to the suggestions listed above, you may want to inquire with the manufacturer of your printer about a yearly preventative maintenance program. Services such as these will provide a yearly checkup by an expert, and will certainly elongate the lifespan of your thermal transfer or direct thermal printer.
