Easy Homemade Cosmetic Products you can Sell

Updated 05/27/2022
Cosmetic product and ingredients.

Gone are the days of thinking you need a certain degree, years of experience or a big warehouse and team to sell. If you have a passion or interest in something and a drive to pursue it, that's all you need. Oh, strong wifi helps, too.

Whether you're a weekend crafter looking to take it to the next level, interested in starting a side hustle from home, or you just love making people look and feel good, homemade cosmetics just may be the way to go. Why? Because the beauty industry is booming and people are more interested than ever in "clean" beauty and homemade products with natural, simple ingredients.

Before we jump straight in, it's important to understand and make sure you're complying with The Food and Drug Administration's regulations before making and selling cosmetic products. The FDA's page goes into detail about the restrictions, requirements and more based on frequently asked questions submitted by people that are getting started in the cosmetics business.

In this article, we'll go over popular homemade cosmetics, how to make them, their ingredients, and how to create cosmetic labels.

Common cosmetic product ingredients.

Popular Cosmetic Products You Can Make From Home

Now, let's get into the fun stuff. Below are some popular cosmetic products you can easily make from home and sell. For most of these, all you need is the ingredients, a microwavable glass bowl, something to mix with, a funnel or syringe to pour, a container for the final product, and a microwave.

Lip Balm

First up: lip balm. We all use it. All ages, all genders, all year long. That's what makes this product so popular. People will always have a need to keep purchasing it. Especially if you're like me and always lose it.

Here's what you'll need (measurements depend on how large you'd like your batch to be but most parts are equal):

  • Oil: Oil is the base of your lip balm. Coconut, olive and jojoba oil are some of the most popular. You can choose which you'd like to use and even use more than one.
  • Beeswax: You can get this in blocks, bars, cubes or pellets. Pellets are known to be the easiest to work with.
  • Butter: Such as cocoa or shea for that extra creamy consistency.
  • Essential oil: Whatever your preference (peppermint, lavender, etc.) and just a few drops.
  • Optional: Other natural ingredients to put your touch on it and make it "flavorful" (think cocoa powder, honey, etc.).

The instructions are even simpler than the ingredients.

  • Step one: Melt ingredients (using a microwave or double boiler).
  • Step two: Combine ingredients.
  • Step three: Fill your containers (lip balm tubes or small jars) using a syringe or funnel.

Many would agree that hydrating and exfoliating go hand in hand and are two of the most important steps for caring for your skin. One of the most common ways to do so is by using scrubs. They're affordable, easy to use, offer many benefits and smell amazing (can't say the same for a dry brush or loofah). Which is why they're so popular.

Body Scrub

There are so many recipes out there (soon to be more when you start selling) and they call for very little ingredients. The one we're outlining below is a coffee body scrub—because who can resist coffee?

Here's what you'll need:

  • ½ cup of coffee grounds: This ingredient gives the body scrub the exfoliating abilities. In other DIY body scrubs, this could be pink Himalayan salt, sea salt, white sugar, raw sugar or oatmeal.
  • 4 tablespoons of brown sugar: Known to be gentler than salt or white sugar.
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil: You probably guessed it, oil helps deliver the moisture.

Lip Scrub

This one might be the easiest cosmetic product you can make from home, ever. You probably have everything it calls for in your kitchen cabinet right now.

Here's what you'll need:

  • 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon powder
  • 2 tablespoons of raw honey
  • 2 tablespoons of oil olive

For both of these scrubs, just mix all of your ingredients together until you get to the consistency you're looking for, put in containers, and voilà!

Establish Your Brand and Add Your Product Labels

Creating a unique brand.

Now that you've made your products, it's time to brand them. Doing so will help your products stand out and appeal to your target audience. Here's where your packaging comes in. You want your labels to be eye-catching, original and reflective of your products.

  • Start by determining what label size and shape is ideal for your products. There are hundreds to choose from so grab a flexible ruler to get accurate measurements of your product's packaging.
  • Pick your label material. Consider what your product is made of. You want to choose a label material that will hold up well. You can't go wrong with waterproof but the options don't end there. For products that can potentially leak oil, are kept in the shower, or are frequently handled like lip balms, we recommend checking out our line of durable weatherproof materials.
  • Design your label. It's time to keep your creative juices flowing. You can work with a design you already have just by uploading it to our blank label template and adjusting accordingly. Or you can take advantage of Maestro Label Designer that comes free with your label purchase. Have fun with it! Your products, your brand, your labels.
