So why is it so expensive to order pre-printed labels? The answer is in all the associated costs built into the price of the labels you see above. It’s very expensive and time consuming for custom label manufacturers to set up a job on press, and they pass those costs onto you.

Another reason why an order of 1,000 pre-printed labels can cost so much is because custom manufacturers account for the waste accrued on each job. So, in sense, you’re paying for labels that will never even be seen…who wants to do that?

In addition to the high cost of having your labels pre-printed, there are plenty of other disadvantages and fees you may run into. Here are just of few of them which can make your total cost even higher than what we’ve already shown you!

Additional Costs, Fees and Disadvantages:

• Set-Up & Plate Fees – For every job that is put on press, the custom label manufacturer adds a "Set-Up or Plate Fee," which typically covers the labor/time spent in preparing the job. Many times this fee is built into the already quoted cost, but depending on the difficulty or size of the job, this can be about $35 to $200 more!
• Art/Design Fees – When your design is submitted to the custom label manufacturer, the art department usually has to spend time formatting, correcting or tweaking it to get it right before it goes on press. If your design isn’t perfect, you may very well be charged an added fee for the time they spend editing or changing it.
• Proofs – When your design is done and ready to be put on press, most custom label manufacturers give you two options for reviewing and approving your proof. The first is an electronic proof that will be emailed to you. Most manufacturers offer this as a 'free' service. The other option is to have a hard copy sent via expedited shipping. This can be upwards of $30 to $50 as an added cost!
• Revisions – Let's say you’re not happy with an element is the design and ask to have it revised. Of course, this comes at a price! Based on our calls, we found any changes made during the approval process can incur fees from $5 to $25 added to the total order.
• Multiple Designs – If you have a line of products, like soap, cosmetics, food, etc., you may want to have one label design, but need to change up a part of it. For example, you need to have the company's logo and address on each label, but need half of the order to say "Vanilla" and half to say "Chocolate." When ordering pre-printed labels, this can get expensive. The companies we found charge between $10 and $50 for each design!
• Minimum Orders – Keep in mind, some custom label manufacturers won’t even take jobs as small as 1,000 sheets without charging a fee for it. This ensures the job will be 'worthwhile' for them to run by taking into account all the waste (lost product) that may be accrued.
• Lag Time – Turnaround time for many custom label manufacturers can be up to 14 days from the time you approve your label design. 14 days! This doesn’t even include shipping or transit time either. If you need your labels any faster, extra charges will apply.
